<![CDATA[Quick Computer Fix, LLC - Kyle\'s Blog]]>Thu, 02 Apr 2026 00:04:41 -0700Weebly<![CDATA[2017!!]]>Tue, 10 Jan 2017 05:14:10 GMThttps://www.quickcomputerfix.com/kyles-blog/2017Bringing in the new year with hopefully some more regularity to my blog posts.  The main thing on my mind lately, besides the typical password recommendations, is a good backup.  For the past 1-2 years, a type of virus called cryptoware has dominated the malicious computer scene.  Lots of money is going into developing and deploying these viruses so they are becoming harder and harder and sometimes impossible to stop.   I can always remove a virus, but if your files get destroyed,  you have the choice to pay the hackers to get them back (sometimes doesn't work), or if you have a backup, you don't have to give them a dime! If you decide to do a physical backup, make sure you only have the backup drive plugged in at the time of backup, don't leave it in all the time.  If you don't want to worry about manually backing up, a cloud backup would take care of you.

Here I terminated some Cat 5e cable and plugged them into a switch.  I also punched down some cat 5e cable for the phone line. ( the unit above the switch).

Secondly, when you are installing those programs, pay careful attention to what it says AS you are installing it.  If you are not careful, it will install trialware or some sort of toolbar that will drag your system down. 
Thirdly, grab a copy of Ccleaner and run it from time to time.  It intelligently cleans out uneeded files and helps keep your computer running smooth.

These are the first things you should do:

1.  Go to a different computer than the one you primarily use (a phone or tablet will do) and immediately change your password.  Make sure you have a healthy dose of "special characters" 
The reason for the requirements of those characters as well as capital letters and numbers is so that computer programs that randomly guess or "brute force" your password, will have a much, much harder time arriving at your password if you have secured it properly.  If your password is "bama", well, it won't take that long for a computer to hack that password.

2. Make sure that your Anti-Virus is up to date and that your computer is acting out of the ordinary.

Google places has decided to completely wipe me off the face of their "list". Google places are the maps that show up when you type a type of industry and a location (plumber jackson ms).  Quick Computer Fix used to first in the query "computer repair jackson ms", but now, it is nowhere to be found and Google has no explanation for why this has happened.  It took me years to get to that position, but I guess I can work to get there again!
